Rokutaro Nakade was a well known Japanese luthier, who played an important role in the development of modern Japanese classical guitar making. Rokutaro Nakade, along with his younger brother Sakazo Nakade, apprenticed under the master violin luthier Kinpachi Miyamoto in the 1930s. Miyamoto had the opportunity to examine and measure Andrés Segovia's guitar during Segovia's Tokyo performance in 1929, which influenced the Nakade brothers. The Nakade brothers travelled to Spain in the 1950s to learn about guitar making from Ramirez and Hernandez & Aguado. Both were highly regarded as makers of classical guitars in Japan. Rokutaro Nakade died in 1973 but Sakazo made guitars until his death in 1993 (aged 87). Sakazo's sons Teruaki, Toshihiko and Yukio Nakade joined him in guitar making in the 1970s as did Rokutaro's son Osamu Nakade - all these names may appear on classical guitar labels.
