The history of the Sgroi Silvestri company dates back to the late 19th century when Santi Sgroi, born in Catania in 1870, married Ermelinda Delfina Maria Silvestri, a luthier born near Modena in 1878. Together, they had five children, including Alarico (Rico) Sgroi, who became involved in the family trade of mandolin making. The Silvestri company, founded in 1891, was known ofr making mandolins. Santi Sgroi also established his own brand, "S. Sgroi Mancuso," in 1888, incorporating his mother's maiden name. The merger of the Sgroi and Silvestri companies led to the formation of "S. Sgroi Silvestri," symbolized by a label indicating the union of the two family names. It's believed that this merger occurred when one of their sons, likely Salvatore, took over the company. The company continued its legacy of instrument making, combining the expertise of both families to produce guitars and mandolins.
